Louis Roederer is one of the greatest and oldest Champagne houses, and, unlike many other labels, has remained family-owned since being founded in Reims, France, in 1776. Notably, it became the house Champagne for the Russian Imperial Court in the 19th century – the famous Cristal cuvée was created at the request of emperor Alexander II and bottled in clear lead-crystal rather than glass, apparently so he could detect any attempts to poison him. Cristal is currently one of the most expensive Champagnes in the world, sourced from the estate’s oldest vines, but will be just one of four vintages available to taste at this special event, which looks at how sparkling wine can be matched to a variety of food flavours.
The evening will be hosted at Annabel's, the renowned Mayfair nightclub that is certainly no stranger to bubbles. The club’s own history only stretches back to 1963, but it has a cellar-full of stories, having entertained Frank Sinatra, John Wayne, Joan Collins, Jack Nicholson and even the Queen – though not all on the same evening. Annabel’s was recently reincarnated inside a different Georgian townhouse on its original base of Berkeley Square, with theatrically flamboyant interior design by Martin Brudnizki. The tasting will take place in the ornate Silver Room, which, with its Art Deco looks and regal flourishes, is just the sort of space that a Champagne-loving Russian tsar would feel at home in.
We know that many of LUXE's London based private clients have a refined appreciation of French champagne and fine dining, so this is one not to be missed.
